1 in 2000 Interview with Ella Hiebert

Overview
For this convergence journal assignment, a select group of students were placed as directors and the remaining students filled teams based on who they thought they'd work well with. I chose to work with Kate Herling, Regan Funkhouser, and Layne Renfrow and we began the process by brainstorming ideas for possible interviews ands/or topics. A few days into brainstorming, we realized that the couple of ideas we had come up with, a majority of the class already knew about, so we decided to take another route. Kate, one of my teammates, recalled that classmate Ella Hiebert was an excellent dancer and that few people knew about her unique talents. Once sharing her idea with the team, we began building our list of 20 questions. This list was built from a variety of questions asking about Ella's passion for dancing, her most memorable moments, her strengths and struggles, and what opportunities it's led her to.

Filming
Day one of filming: After location scouting around the school, we found a spot on the back pod staircase where there was lots of natural light and not a lot of commotion. Since this was out first video incorporating a mic it took us slightly longer to get everything set up and positioned for filming.
Day two of filming: On day two of filming, things definitely went a lot smoother. We went faster in the setting up process and wrapped up the interview in a reasonable amount of time. In addition, we filmed some b-roll of Ella dancing on the bar in near the staircase and had her send in some b-roll of her at dance rehearsals from her studio.

The Editing Process
Editing the video is probably where I found myself struggling the most. I did a good job at sequencing, adjusting audio levels, and adding transitions, however, I wish I could improve my work with more advanced techniques such as shot stabilization and color correction. Overall though, the story came together nicely and makes sense with the incorporation of b-roll and voiceovers. I also feel that my voiceovers allowed for a smooth transition into the interview responses.
