With this challenge we were told to make changes to "Jarod" our subject by changing skin or facial features, his clothing, and/or the background. In doing so, we were required to incorporate layer masks, blending modes, and adjustment layers.
Inspiration/Thought Process
Going into this assignment, I didn't have much of an idea as to what my theme would be. My original idea was to mask his jacket with a cloudy pattern and make his hair rainbow, however, the combined patterns were just too overwhelming. I later found a simple splatter paint pattern to provide plenty of color to the image, and complimented it with an rainbow ombre-like feel in his hair. I feel this combination really tied the piece together.
Selection of Tools
For this photoshop challenge, I was able to work with layer masks, blending modes, and adjustment layers. I began by masking Jarod's jacket because I wanted the splatter paint pattern to appear only on that masked selection. From there, I used blending modes on both the jacket and his hair. Doing so on the jacket allowed for the darkening of shadows to give the texture a more realistic feel. On the hair however, I lighted the mode to make the colors pop and seem more vibrant. Once I had made all my changes in color and pattern, I brightened the overall image because the lighting in the original seemed dull.
Final Thoughts
For this being our first Photoshop Challenge, I feel I executed all the requirements in a fun and unique way. If I were to pick something to improve for next time, I would add some detailing to the background. I hope to be able to increase my Photoshop knowledge and better enhance my projects in the future.
